Awards Juror


Rick Shaefer is a contemporary American visual artist who creates ambitious large-scale landscapes. Shaefer studied at Duke University, in Durham, North Carolina, and the Art Center: College of Design, in Pasadena, California. He interrupted those studies to immerse himself in the art worlds of London and New York City, and later received a B.A. from the University of Maryland while living in Europe. Shaefer built a 12-year fashion-photography career in New York before returning to painting and drawing. He has twice received a Pollack Krasner Foundation Grant and has exhibited his work widely in venues across the United States. His work is part of notable collections, including the U.S. Department of State Art in Embassies Program, Microsoft and American Express, as well as many private collections.
