Drawing Together Episode 42: Apple-ying Ourselves

this episode is Part of the Drawing Together live video series – learn more here

Recent conversations with some viewers have encouraged me to reflect on the way I use graphite. In this episode, I’ll create this drawing using a single 4B graphite pencil, and see how I can apply lessons from charcoal drawing to graphite. 1. Hi Scott… Just discovered your Drawing Together videos. I’m a very ‘left of brain’ thinker, and never did any art at school (30 years ago!) – So learning to ‘see’ creatively is difficult for me – I’m hoping it’s all down to practice, practice, practice and I’ll get there if it is – but having your thoughts narrated and trying to draw real time with the videos is an mind opener for me. My first effort with the apples attached – Looking forward to trying some more. Thanks for what you do. Paul – UK

  2. I enjoyed this one a lot; can’t seem to get dark enough darks with the regular #2 pencils I’m using, so drawing looks a little washed out, but still a good exercise; thanks, Scott!

  3. Done on 8 x 10 sketch paper so my lights aren’t as light as I’d like. I’ve had a woodless pencil for years and these drawing together classes are perfect for me to use it. I think I will get more in a set.

  4. I LOVE the aspect of ‘drawing together’. It keeps me committed to attempt and complete the piece during the session along with everybody else who had tuned in live.

Scott, Thank you for putting this series together. It is amazing to see a whole community of artists come together and motivate each other.

I especially love the way you talk through what is going on in your mind as you make your marks on the paper. It has taught me to be ‘present’ and observant in my own mark making.

  5. Thank you, Scott. I find every class to be interesting and thought provoking. I think that using charcoal techniques with a woodless pencil was uniquely challenging. I find fabric to be very difficult.

  6. It has been 40 years since I worked with charcoal and graphite, forgot how much I like them. Get into the zone fast. Thank you the drawing togetherness is just the ticket.

  7. I literally rolled my woodless pencil so much that in one quick move I accidentally stabbed myself with it…that blotch on the right apple is not an apple blemish, it’s where I quickly blotted up a drop of blood. HAHAHA! This was fun…I usually don’t like still life stuff.

  8. Thanks for yet another fun Drawing Together time. My 1st time drawing using a pencil, was a bit different from the charcoal but I think I got it. Think the apple on the right is a bit large but was fun drawing them. Thanks Scott for these Drawing Together “classes”.
